week 2
- How does this activity engage students who are at different levels of literacy development? The activity is interesting and is motivating for all the students. The topic of hot dogs makes students interested and motivated. It also helps that it is a rhyme. Also, the students are all sitting on the rug together reading out loud to get everyone involved.
- During her explicit phonics lesson, how does Ms. Perez support students’ problem-solving skills? She calls on all different students to answer and she gives a lot of positive reinforcement. She makes it interesting and exciting! She guides each student and gives hints and sounds to help blend and sound out sounds.
- Based on what you saw in the video, what are the different ways that shared reading can be used to promote literacy? The students are promoted to share their answers. Also, they enjoy when they are all sitting and reading out loud. Even if one student can not sound out the word, she will hear it from her peers and then read it correctly. This will help her fluency in reading.
- Why does she think it’s important for students to verbalize their strategies? What else do you notice about how she helps students build meaning in text? When a student verbalizes what they think, it helps them be clear and to internalize good reading strategies. She rephrases what the student says which is beneficial. She keeps on stopping the students who are reading and asks questions and points out what they are doing correctly and where they need to reread. She also puts in exclamation to help them understand parts of the story.
- How does Ms. Perez organize her classroom to support a wide range of learners? She has the class split into different groups depending on their wide ranges and each group has a student teacher to guide them.
- How are reading and writing connected in classroom activities? The teacher taught the students how to write notes on what they read. She taught them to focus on the important parts of the book.
- How does Ms. Perez use ongoing individual assessment to guide her instruction? How can the class profile be used to help group students and differentiate instruction? She assesses her students in the first week of the school year and then again a few times throughout the year. She sees from there where the students need extra help and where they are having trouble. She then makes her classroom activities based on that.
- How can ongoing assessment be integrated into your own classroom practice? I would like to integrate it in reading. I would like to assess the students at the beginning of the year and then a few times in the middle to see how the students progressed.
Very clear answers, and I appreciate the mention of the poem topic as a way to engage students in the activity itself.
